Doc Gooden's wife had to take their two children, move in with her parents and apply for welfare.
Former Mets and Yankees ace pitcher Dwight "Doc" Gooden has abandoned his family -- leaving his two kids scrounging to survive on public assistance and food stamps, his wife told The Post.
Monique Gooden said she and her children -- 5-year-old son Dylan and 4-month-old daughter Milan -- are living with her parents in their home in Columbia, Md., as the troubled 1985 National League Cy Young Award winner is nowhere to be found.
"He's left us with no money," his slighted spouse said. "When I got here to Maryland, I had to go apply for social services, food stamps and health insurance for the kids. He has offered no financial assistance to us."
Monique, a former flight attendant, said she is unaware of her estranged husband's whereabouts -- only that the 1984 National League Rookie of the Year had been holed up in a hotel somewhere in New Jersey back in May.
The couple wed in January 2009, but Monique claims they haven't lived together since May 1.
"You know what, right now I'm so stressed, I've been so stressed that every day has been a struggle for me," she said. "I just want support for the kids at this time . . . I just want to take care of them."
The Mets are scheduled to honor the 45-year-old four-time All-Star -- who retired in 2001 -- as one of four inductees into the team's Hall of Fame next weekend.
Monique said her husband's latest downward spiral began March 23 when he crashed into another car while allegedly driving under the influence of drugs with his son in the car.
He was hit with a slew of charges and released on his own recognizance.
Since then, Monique said, things only got worse -- claiming her husband stopped paying bills.
Monique said she last saw her husband on June 22 in Bergen County Family Court. The couple is due back in court in mid-August.
Dwight, who played on World Series champions with the Mets in 1986 and the Yankees in 1996 and 2000, could not be reached for comment.

So the first thing you thought to do was give a woe is me interview? Out of her own mouth she said this man is troubled. Clearly he is plagued by alcohol and drug abuse so what more did she expect from him? If they in fact just married in 2009 she was well aware of the issues surrounding this man. I have a hard time feeling sorry for her, but I do have sympathy for the children. After all they didn't ask to be thrown into this mess their parents created. I wonder how much she was paid to give this interview? Slightly suspicious that she gives this "interview" a week before he is inducted into the Hall of Fame. She saw him June 22nd? I thought she was going to say the last time she saw him was last year. All I can say is she needs to go reapply for a flight attendant job. He might be a dead beat dad but that doesn't mean you don't do what's best for your children until you can get the court to work out a plan.

She stupid for marrying his dumb ass after he punched her in the face...that would have been the first clue (if it wasn't one that she should have seen before this incident) that he was having some effin issues. Maybe she should have thought about that before she said "I do" and had two kids.
She married him for the wrong reason...That's what the hell she gets....Now she's another statistic.
If they had that volatile of a relationship then she never should have married him in the first place. She used to be a flight attendant, well, that tells me that she has some skills to put to good use. One monkey don't stop no show; life goes on for her and her children and I'm glad that she took steps to get assistance for her and her children for the time being.

A little birdie told me that she knew exactly where he was. I was told that he "sent" her home to stay with her parents because he wasn't happy in said marriage. It's hard for me to feel sorry for her because she had a great job with an airline and even taught as a school teacher on the side.
