Teena Marie passed on December 26, 2010.
"R&B singer Teena Marie, whose hits in the 1980s included `I Need Your Lovin` and `Lovergirl`, has died at the age of 54, police said.Jacked from American Chronicle
Marie was found dead at her home in the Los Angeles suburb of Pasadena on Sunday afternoon, according to a police spokesman.
Although she was white, Marie grew up in a predominantly black Los Angeles neighborhood and began singing professionally when she was eight.
After graduating from high school she signed with Motown Records, the label which was home to contemporaries such as Diana Ross and `The Jackson 5.`" AFP
Soul singer Teena Marie, known as the "Ivory Queen of Soul", passed away at age 54. Teena Marie was no Pat Boone or Vanilla Ice who shamelessly copied black musical genres and marketed it to a white audience.
Teena was a genuine soul sister, and she had a love and respect for soul music that was manifest in her heartfelt delivery of her songs.
R & B has always been my favorite genre, and growing up I listened almost exclusively to black music stations. When I first hear Teena Marie on the radio, I didn`t realize that the new Motown star was white. Soul music lovers, black and white, immediately fell in love with the soulful diva.
Teena was often overshadowed by her mentor, Rick James, but today the spotlight is solely on her. Rests in peace Teena, soul music lovers of all races mourn your passing.

rip lady t there will never be another like you
Man, that is such a great loss... First Teddy Pendergrass now Teena Marie?! Damn, we are officially stuck with no talent assholes now!
Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Taylor Swift take note: This lady was a real singer. She did not rely on auto-tunes and pro tools. She was a legend. In the year 2100 people will still listen to her music. All you other so called singers are just industry made illuminati hacks!
Thank God that everyone in this comment section so far has some comman sense. ditto all the above comments. lady T was the true def of a real artist. Gone too soon! SQUARE BIZ!!
you will be truly missed, now you sing for a greater auidence. RIP
The Ivory Queen of Soul...she was one of my favorite artist. I had the previlege of seeing her in NYC when I was a little girl, in London at the Hammersmith Oden and several times here in California. I was just going to see her perform in the next few weeks/days at the Oakland Paramount Theater. Lady T....you will be missed. Say hello to Rick if he is up there too smoking a big one!--ThatBKChick one of your #1Fans
This is really sad news for all the ppl who loved and appreciated Teena's gift of music to the world. I don't think we'll ever get another one like her. My prayers to all who loved her and a special prayer for little Alis Rose.
She was talented period! The artist of today need to take notes. Her songs will live on.
God help us when these no talented artists decide to do a BET tribute to her and totally destroy her music. I hope to hell they don't, but you know these attention whores will. All I can say is, please let Beyonce sit her ass down some where. Tina was quoted as saying there are a "few" really good artists out there, but most of em are either putting out corny music or it's super foul and she can't handle either. Music is supposed to touch your soul and that's exactly what her voice did. We will miss you Lady Tee, now you can sing among the Angels.
"Behind the Groove", "Work It", "Casanova Brown"..... Timeless hits.....There will never me another.... Teena, Rest in Peace...Definitely gone too soon :(
Thanks for the memories. Ooo la la la!
R.I.P Lady T
Co-Sign w/10:33pm. That's what I'm p!ssed about. Some1 else said this too; when BET, Soul Train, etc. FINALLY honor her now POSTHUMOUSLY, it's too late, they should have already done this. My beef is that instead, they choose to honor a person in particular who is as far as I'm concerned, undeserving & overrated. They didn't need anymore accolades, give it to those who hadn't gotten there's yet & 1 of those was Lady T. But whatever-Tv One's saving grace is doing the UNSUNG episode on her. There will be other specials/shows about her & rightly so, & I look forward to her life being celebrated, but she needed her flowers when she was still here.
I agree with ALL of you! This lady's music moves your soul and makes your spirit sing! RIP Lady "T"
This is an amazing woman and just one bad sistah. She wrote, played instruments and had the vocals that could silence these so called singers today. She is one of those REAL talented people who was underrated. I am so sick of REAL talent being ignored and/or not given the accolades and attention it deserves. REAL talented people concern themselves about quantity not quality. Lady T was amongst the best and she deserved more than what she received. God bless you Lady T. Your music will live on.
^^^Sorry,,,Real talented people are more concerned about QUALITY NOT QUANTITY.
