Esperanza Spalding Attacked by Justin Bieber Fans

After Justin Bieber lost the Grammy for Best New Artist to Esperanza Spalding last night, his fans went into a frenzy attacking Esperanza online.
Beware the Beliebers!

After obscure jazz singer Esperanza Spalding was the surprise winner in the Grammys "Best New Artist" category -- beating out Justin Bieber, Mumford & Sons, Florence + the Machine and Drake -- Bieber fans went on an Internet rampage.

Angry "Beliebers" attacked Spalding's Wikipedia page, adding insults, taunts and pro-Bieber messages. After the page listed her as "Best New Artist" winner, one fan wrote, "Justin Bieber deserved it go die in a hole. Who the heck are you anyway?" Another fan wrote "Biber 4 Lyfe." By Monday, the page had been scrubbed clean of insults.

Bieber was slightly less confrontational, though he did tell MTV News, "I'm not going to lie -- I was disappointed. But, you know, I'm gonna come back [next year] and we'll take a few home." He also tweeted to his fans, "As for the awards...of course I wanted to win. Its been & still is a dream to win a grammy. Was I upset...yes. But I was happy for her also. Someone said to me tonight its not your successes that define u but your failures. I lost..but I don't plan on this being my last chance."

"I certainly did not expect to even be considered for that type of nomination," Spalding told Entertainment Weekly. "Me being a little old jazz musician and everything."
But who is she?

The Portland, Oregon-born multilingual singer and upright bass player released her first record, Junjo, in 2006. She followed it up with Esperanza, in 2008, and made major waves in the jazz world. She appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live, and President Obama invited her to perform at the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Concert. In 2010, she released Chamber Music Society, which garnered her the "Best New Artist" nomination.

Next up she'll be releasing a new record -- Radio Music Society -- and heading out on tour with Prince, of whom she says "Everybody knows the hype of who he is as an artist, but he also happens to be a really lovely person. He’s a really, really cool dude. If you ever got a chance to just sit and have a drink with him, you would be laughing and having a great time."

Forget Justin BoyBye's fans. Maybe at long last the academy is recognizing REAL talent again and choosing it over popularity.

Admittedly - I didn't know who she was a few days ago. Before BieberGate even was a thought is some tween hackers head, I Googled her Wiki page based on an interview I read on her. She's a refreshing new artist with talent that deserves all the accolades she's received so far.
I hope she grows beyond the 'Best New Artist' curse and breaks out commercially - or not. From what I read, she's set on staying true to her craft and aesthetic, so we'll see...

Although I have no idea who she is, I am certainly happy that she won instead of that lil brat. His talent is mediocre at best. Pop artists are a manufactured product packaged to be sold to the masses. His whole image is his hair!?! I damn sure aint spending any money on that.

She's a protege of Prince. So I'm excited to hear more from her. #TEAMPRINCE!

My dad introduced me to her music a couple of years ago and I was enthralled. Happy she won the award and deservedly so. I'm tired of this formula pop music and image personalities lacking ability (see, I don't call them talented singers and musicians). I stopped listening to pop, manufactured mainstream songs years ago.

I totally agree with all of you. The Grammy's, I think are getting the message. It is time that people win who bring something new and refreshing to the game or artist who are growing and developing...People like BEYAWNCE and others are simply making a mockery of the Grammy's. How many Grammy's can you continue to give to someone. The only way people should win multiple Grammy's if they are collaborative and innovative. There is nothing innovative than the same top 40 artist winning every single damned time. This makes artist and people strive for creativity.

Maybe this will get rid of some of the plain garbage I am tired of hearing...And will someone tell T-PAIN TO STFU with that damned VOCODER..Tell Kayne to stop his bitching and wining (((((LA-LA-LA)))....NO ONE IS LISTENING!--ThatBKChick

I am GLAD she won. She is not some overnight manufactured "artist". She is the REAL deal and, like many of you have said, maybe the Grammys now are getting the message to stop rewarding mediocrity. That mess last year I think was the red flag that got the attention of the committee. Stop allowing people to buy awards and accolades. Many were surprised when this child won Artist of the Year at the AMAs. Was he suppose to win a grammy on popularity? Get out of here....he cannot hold a candle to this woman.
