Adele makes Billboard chart history this week, as "Someone Like You" flies to the top spot on the Hot 100 -- even though it wasn't officially released as a single, it's still all over Denver radio.Jacked from Westword
Adele deserves this, though. Girl has had a huuuuuge year in music. First "Rolling in the Deep" sells five million copies, then 21 becomes the year's biggest album, with 3.3 million copies sold, then she stops the show at the VMAs with her performance of "Someone Like You."
Is there anything this woman with a broken heart can't do? She's on top of the game right now, at a time when none of her contemporaries are even coming close.
The thing about Adele that clicks with people is her relatability. She deals with heartbreak. So do we. She sings her heart out about an ex, and we belt out trashy karaoke at a bar in LoDo to appease our broken hearts. Really, you can't help but root for the woman even more when you find out how young she is (23) and feel how much age rings through in her voice. She's like a wine that America is drinking by the carafe. Keep the hits coming, Adele.
And remember back when Adele started? She and Duffy -- or that one chick that sang "Mercy" -- entered the scene after Amy Winehouse had blazed the way for their retro-soul sound in the 21st century. Critics were slow to take on Adele, but now they're quick to pass on Duffy, as the latter has declared a hiatus from music.
If you're one of the millions who has purchased 21, you know that Adele has more hits up her sleeve -- whether she opts to release them as singles or not. Apparently it doesn't matter; they'll still chart. That's how powerful her voice is. Ain't no man gon' stop her, either
