Beyonce Flop Forces Rick Ruben Out at Columbia?

Rick Rubin is out at Columbia Records. Is it Beyonce's fault?
Legendary music producer Rick Rubin is out at Columbia Records, amid a culture clash at the Sony Music label between the suits and the creatives, sources tell us -- but he may land on his feet at Warner Music Group.

The grizzly-bearded Columbia co-chairman, the co-founder of Def Jam who discovered the Beastie Boys, has been missing at the label “for months,” sources say, and he’ll be out officially in the next few weeks, before his contract expires in January.

A feud has erupted between Rubin and co-chairman Steve Barnett, a business-minded executive, over who can take credit for the label’s biggest success, Adele, who sold more than 3 million records, and who should be blamed for disappointing sales of BeyoncĂ©’s album “4,” in the eyes of new boss, Sony CEO Doug Morris.

Rubin will have his revenge soon enough. He will now become their competition.

With any company someone has to be blamed when their highest selling artist album flops.

Music changes constantly and people look for different styles of music.

Adele sold that many albums due to her singing ability not standing on stage half dressed.

Hell quite frankly they need to bring back music from the 90s on back.

Beyaki might get a lot of attention off this baby spectacle she created...including the clothing line etc. But I think her days of being at the top are numbered. She is over exposed, overrated and evident she has to steal other people's creativity to stay relevant. She's making enemies in the business and it's a matter of time before someone with real talent shows up and it will be a person that is a virtual nobody.

The album flopped because it's wack. Jesus couldn't save that album.

The guy's a legend.

Yeah, I give Rick Rubin props because he was in rap before the corporations figured out how to destroy rap as an art form. Rubin couldn't save Columbia. It is simple as that. The music industry as it existed in his day is dead.

Warner Brothers, oops Warner Music Group, is famous for nuturing talent (e.g. Prince, Madonna, and the list goes on and on). The Chairman of Warner Music Group, Edgar Bronfman, stated that all new deals with Warner Group will be 360 deals. This gives the labels new streams of revenue. With music downloads sales of traditional music formats are not driving profits like before. The 360 deal allows the label to get paid when the artist gets paid (tours, movies, books, endorsements, etc).

Rick Rubin knows that he can get more money while "developing" an artist at Warner. Let's crunch the numbers (taken from The Smoking Section):

Male rapper based in Atlanta with a strong following. He has his own team of inexperienced friends and family around him and a very strong street following. The DJs, fans, other artists and industry are supporting him and propelling him forward. With no real single or CD in the marketplace, demand is high—he’s getting $30,000 a show and performing three or four times a week for the past few months. This will last about 6 months, approximately. He’s put out a series of mixed CDs, for free, over the past year. The label signed him to a 360 Deal a year ago but hadn’t begun to promote him yet because their roster was full. The artist got tired of waiting and began putting out a new mixed CD every month to build his buzz.

Advance: $75,000
Album budget once popularity increased: $350,000
Recoupable Marketing and Promotions: $750,000
Monthly show income: $420,000
Endorsement Deal: $50,000

Album comes out and sells a total of 350,000 copies (it was a very commercial album but the artist had been very street, almost gutter, up to the point of his album release so fans didn’t really embrace the album as expected).

Album income for label: $3.5 million
Artists’ share after recouping: negative balance of $405,000
$750,000 + $75,000 = $825,000
12% of $3.5 mill = $420,000
$825,000 – $420,000 = $405,000
Artist’s endorsement deal share: $37,500
75% of $50,000
Artists share of touring income: $1,764,000
70% of $420,000 x 6 months
Artists share of publishing income (50%): $100,000 (estimate of mechanicals and ASCAP/BMI royalties)

Income for Label: $4,773,500 gross income on an investment of $825,000
$3,500,000 sales
$405,000 recoupment
$12,500 endorsement income
$756,000 tour/show income
+ $100,000 publishing income
$4,773,500 gross income
Less Staff costs
Less Day to Day operating expenses
Less taxes
Income for Artist: $1,122,375 income
$37,500 endorsement income
$1,764,000 tour income
+$100,000 publishing income
$1,901,500 sub total
-$405,000 recoupment
$1,496,500 gross income
Less 20% management fee
Less 5% Business Manager fee (Accountant)
Less Tour costs/legal costs/tour manager/DJ/Operating expenses/taxes

Let’s compare gross incomes…
Artist made 1.5 million while label made 4.7 million
Artist share: 24%
Label share: 76%

Let’s compare Net incomes before taxes...
Artist made approximately $1 million while the label made approximately $4.5 million
Artist share: 18%
Label share: 82%

I know this was long but the jist is this, the artist makes no more from a 360 deal than they would with a traditional contract. The labels will still get the lion's share.

selling 500k+ album in this day and age is not a flop , so i have to say this is bs and beyonce has nothing to do with him leaving/being fired considering rick name is no where mention on4s credits anywhere

Anonymous said...

^^^^It may not be a flop to you but it is for the record company and that's what matters.

Anonymous said...

@5:57 PM
That is how it works. The record can be profitable but not as profitable as another investment. That's called opportunity cost. If the money invested in 4 could have been more profitable elsewhere, then the shareholders are going to be upset.

@5:33

It's a flop depending on the artist. For a new artist 500k would be great. For the caliber that Beyonce's people are trying so hard to sell her as 500k is a flop. 1 Mill would be a flop. She's not as hot as they think she is and the stealing has turned a lot of people off. I wouldn't blame anyone who decided to download her music for free.

LISTEN people and Columbia: THE ALBUM WAS A BIG ASS FLOP, IT WAS NOT A GOOD ALBUM, and Beyonce was told to fix it but her husband said its good the way it was.

The fault of the pathetic album falls with Beyonce and her STUPID HUSBAND, yes I said stupid because he is, just because he has money and YALL buy all his crap does not mean he knows what he is doing, ROC NATION IS CRAP!!

@5:33 and 6:35 STFU the album was a big FLOP.

The only reason Beyonces illiterate ass made as big as she did was shaking her pussy, and there were no really good singers.

THAT IS THE ONLY REASON........FLOP!!

What I don't understand is where this idea that Jay Z is a savvy business man comes from. What you say might be true but the only business Jay really cares about is his own personal career.

On its first day of sales, 4 shipped more than 10,000 copies in Poland,[124] more than 120,000 copies in Brazil,[175] and sold around 32,000 in the United Kingdom on its first day itself.[176] According to The Official Charts Company data, 4's opening day sales were more than the combined sales of its three nearest challengers, being Adele's 21 (2011), Lady Gaga's Born This Way (2011), and Adele's first studio album 19 (2008) for that day.[176] After a complete week of sales, 4 debuted atop the UK Albums Chart on July 4, 2011, with first-week sales of 89,211,[177] In its second week of release, 4 remained atop the chart, selling 44,929 copies.[178] For the week commencing July 4, 2011, 4 opened at number two on the Australian ARIA Albums chart, giving Knowles her highest ever chart debut on that chart,[179] and started at number one on its urban chart.[180] 4 debuted at number three on the Canadian Albums Chart selling 8,700 copies in its first week,[181] and at number two in France selling 12,393 copies in its first week.[182] According to the Japanese music charting site Oricon, the album debuted at number ten, selling 18,984 copies for the week ending July 11, 2011.[183]

In the United States, 4 debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, with first-week sales of 310,000 copies.[184] This gave Knowles her fourth consecutive solo debut at the top of the chart and makes her the second female artist and third artist overall, to have her first four studio albums debut atop the Billboard 200.[184] 4's first-week sales became Knowles' lowest sales start with a studio album to date.[184] However, Keith Caulfield of Billboard magazine commented that the album was not released during the festive season and that Knowles was so far lacking a hit single, which could help explain the album's softer entry.[184] Its lead single, "Run the World (Girls)" peaked at No. 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 - the first time the first single from a Knowles' studio set has missed the top ten. He finally added that "4's bow is pretty big for 2011. It marks the third-largest sales week of the year, after the [number one] bows of Lady Gaga's Born This Way and Adele's 21."[184] 4 became the ninth solely-numerical titles (including roman numerals) to have reigned since the chart launched as a weekly survey the week of March 24, 1956.[185] In its second week, the album remained at number one on the Billboard 200, despite an 63% sales decrease, selling 115,000 copies. It hence became the first album by Knowles to top the Billboard 200 albums chart for more than one week.[186] On August 1, 2011, the album was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), for shipments of one million copies to retail stores.[187] For the week ending September 10, 2011, 4 fell to number 12 on the US Billboard 200,[188] after having spent eight consecutive week in the top 10 positions.[189] However, after Knowles' performance at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, 4 registered an 87% rise in sales, allowing it to re-enter the top 10 of the US Billboard 200 at number seven, selling 39,000 copies for the week ending September 17, 2011.[190]

@12:00am

How much is it going to cost to pay off Anne? It may have cost 300k to make the album but how much did it cost to market it? If it takes her a whole year to sell 1 Mill albums is that really where her people want her to be?

Ciara is the least of Bey's worries right now.

Bey is just about finished - as a matter of fact her career ended the day she fired Matty as if nothing else he was able to control the media surrounding her. JayZ doesn't have Matty skills in directly Bey's career as JayZ is not all that keen into Bey continuing in the spotlight - he wants a wife/children, which is why he has had a mistress for as long as he has been with Bey. Also why he hasn't spoken out about Matty mistress/child. Bey is a performer - not a true artist as none of her music will be the classic kind that will be played in 10, 20 years. Her artistry is full of stealing lyrics and choreography moves - which was ok when she had Matty but not so much now that he is gone. This babygate is nothing more than her attempt to move copies of her music as it is a big flop - given how much the industry invested vs the return as well as slowing the rumors about her husbands dead mistress and long hidden son. Matty would have kept most of this out of the media but Bey/Jay don't have those same skills. Isn't it funny that JayZ isn't going around speaking on the impending birth of his 'first' child after years of speaking on wanting one? This next year will be her achilles heel as people are going to be exposed to the 'real' Bey and many will be disappointed in what they learn.

JayZ doesn't have money. He has a lifestyle that he carries on his name only, but he doesn't have real money.

Remember those ridiculous clubs he tried to open with casinos? Yeah, those took a nosedive after six months and he was ushed out because he can't manager shit. Putting yo name on shit don't mean folks will spend their money. He thinks the stans are stupid. I think Caesars turned that club into a sports book. Look it up.
