Good Times star Jimmy 'J.J.' Walker calls Jay Leno a joke stealer who turned his back on his fellow comedians after he made it big.
The “Good Times” are over.
Seventies sitcom star Jimmie “J.J.” Walker is ripping into ex-pal Jay Leno in a soon-to-be published memoir — claiming he stole jokes and even drove one former comedy writer to “suicide.”
Walker — famous for the catchphrase “Dyn-o-mite!” — says he is “stunned and hurt” at how the “Tonight Show” host turned his back on stand-up comics after he hit it big.“Because of Jay Leno, we have changed and segregated comedy,” he tells The Post. “In his however many years on the air, he has not broken one comic.”Walker — who was raised in a South Bronx housing project — once employed both Leno and David Letterman for $150 a week to write his jokes. Leno even appeared on an episode of “Good Times” before “The Tonight Show” took notice of him.
“Most people think there was some kind of halo over their heads,” he says. “There was not. They were just ordinary guys working.
“ Jay was well-respected and known as the hottest comic around. And he embraced that. The problem was he couldn’t get on Carson.
“He did Carson in ’77. And he didn’t do badly. It was just that Carson didn’t like him and that is the way Carson rolled.
“Carson doesn’t like you, that’s just tough s--t.”
Walker spends an entire chapter dishing on how his former friend turned to a close-knit circle of comics for support when he was struggling, but did not return the favor when he made it.
“The comics who started out together in New York would try to help each other out when any of us enjoyed some success,” he writes in the book. “We knew how difficult it was to survive. That is why what Leno did to Steve Crantz was unforgivable.”
Crantz, also known as “The Greek,” was a joke writer who bailed out Leno by coming up with material for his first Showtime TV special in 1979 — in just one week.
Years later, at the urging of Walker and his agent, Jerry Kushnick, Leno reluctantly hired the comic as a staff writer for “The Tonight Show” — but refused to use any of his jokes on the air.
When Kushnick passed away, Crantz was fired. He returned home to Pittsburgh, where he died three years later.
“I look at it as a suicide,” Walker says. “You knew what that was about.” Walker, who continues to perform stand-up at age 64, also describes how he was banned from “The Tonight Show” in 1993 for telling a joke about serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer that Leno said he didn’t like.
Jacked from NY Post“A couple weeks later, Leno was quoted in a national magazine with a joke about Dahmer,” he remembers. “It was my joke!”

I was watching Good Times yesterday! I have the whole series on dvd. Jimmy is so funny! I saw that episode with Jay Leno on it. Jay isn't humble at all. Jay looks out for Jay indeed.
I believe this Jay give off and arrogant air about him. My mom use to be friends with Jimmie and says he is a nice down to earth guy.
I love me some good times!!!!
I love throw back television shows; especially Good Times; the same situations they were dealing with back in the 70's, we are dealing with most of them now; inflation, slow hiring, lack of jobs, high food prices. And they made it through by putting God first and just doing the best that they could. GOOD TIMES, anytime you meet a payment, GOOD TIMES.... aint we lucky we got 'em...
leno was on the one where jj thought he had VD and jay was in the doctors office. He was weird looking then.
Most comedians steal jokes, just ask Carlos Mencia, he is the most notorious thief in comedy.
This is why Eddie Murphy gets respect. When he made it big, he helped other comedians like Arsenio Hall, Chris Rock, Martin Lawrence and Dave Chappelle.
Rosie Odonell said the same thing about Leno when she was on the Howard Stern Show.
EASY CREDIT RIP OFFS! GOOD TIMES! SCRATCHIN AND SURVIVIN! GOOD TIMES!
I can vouch for Jimmy-- He was with "General Mgt" Corp- I started sending Leno jokes...in 1987--! Jay even called me at my home. (I had faxed him jokes)--When he was subbing for Carson--He defintely used my jokes--! I had been faxing dozens to him-! Leno is a rat--a dirty swindler--! And something else...Leno did-to me was egregious..(At the time he was with Helen Kushnick)--
