Actress Michelle Rodriguez says Nicole Kidman won't win an Oscar for her role in The Paperboy because you have to be trashy and Black not just trashy.
Michelle Rodriguez has some, um, interesting thoughts about the Academy Awards.
The actress was recently interviewed at theCannes Film Festival, where Rodriguez raved about Nicole Kidman’s performance in the much buzzed-about The Paperboy.
Rodriguez is quoted in Vulture as saying, “I f**king loved it. One of my friends said, ‘She’s going to get nominated for an Oscar for that.’ I was like, ‘Nah, man. She’s not black!’”
She reportedly continued, “I laugh, but it’s also very sad. It makes me want to cry. But I really believe. You have to be trashy and black to get nominated. You can’t just be trashy.”
Rodriguez seems to be implying that Oscar nods don’t get handed out for white “trashy” roles as often as for “trashy” parts played by people of color.
We’ve reached out to Rodriguez for clarification on exactly what she meant.

well she sort of has a point. the only time a black person is nominated for an oscar and actually wins one if he/she is playing a maid, a whore, or a murderer. white people don't win oscars for playing "trashy" characters unless the character's background/history is one everyone will sympathize with. i.e charlize theron in monster.

I think what she meant was that Nicole is playing a trashy character (Nicole pees on someone in the movie) and that only black people can win while playing a trashy character i.e. Monique, Halle, Denzel, and Forest. To be honest I don't pay attention to the white winners or the characters they played to be able to say that white trashy characters don't win. Charlize Theron won while playing a prostitute serial killer but that's the only one I know of.
