Lady Gaga slammed by composer Stephen Sondheim for her Oscar performance of The Sound of Music.
While Lady Gaga's Sound Of Music performance at the Oscars may have won over fans it failed to impress one of musical theater's greatest legends.
Composer Stephen Sondheim has let his disapproval of the pop star's rendering of several songs from the hit musical as a 'travesty'.
Speaking with the Times Of London the Broadway hitmaker, who turns 85 later this month, could not veil his distaste for the widely celebrated performance.
Discussing the televised moment, he said of Gaga: 'On the Academy Awards she was a travesty.'
'It was ridiculous, as it would be from any singer who treats that music in semi-operatic style. She had no relationship to what she was singing.'
'What people liked was her versatility,' he explained.
The Sweeney Todd composer also voiced his disgust for other recent television reboots of famous musicals, citing Carrie Underwood's The Sound Of Music bomb and Allison Williams in Peter Pan Live.
'From what little I've seen, they're so embarrassingly bad you have to sit and make fun of them or you're just wasting your time,' he said.
Sondheim is currently awaiting revivals of his hits Sweeney Todd and Gypsy on the West End.Jacked from The Daily Mail
