The teen pop star's Vanity Fair cover is likely to be the worst selling issue in 12 years, according to Women's Wear Daily. The magazine sold a paltry 246,000 copies, the biggest loser since the magazine put Will Smith on the cover in 1999.
But is it Justin Bieber or just his gender?
According to a report from the online media publication MIN, all of Vanity Fair's best selling issues from 2010 have featured women on the cover. Its August issue featuring Angelina Jolie on the cover sold over 500,000 copies. The issues featuring Lady Gaga, Meryl Streep and Marilyn Monroe covers sold over 400,000 copies each.
In contrast, Its sexy soccer photo featuring Ronaldo sold only 269,000 issues.
All of Vanity Fair's newsstand stinkers have featured men on the cover – The 1991 "Wild, Wild West" themed Will Smith sold a mere 202, 701 issues. Harrison Ford fared only slightly better in July 1993 with 243,000 copies.
Then again, a Bieber cover hasn't spelled gold for other magazines either.
His October 2010 Teen Vogue cover sold a sad 121,054 issues, according to ABC data. People magazine's April 2010 "All about Bieber" issue sold 961,762 copies, the third worst seller for the weekly all of last year.
So are people sick of Bieber – or just not buying magazines?
"Who knew 12-year-olds didn't buy magazines?" a Vanity Fair spokeswoman told WWD
